Ursula Ruhl
The daughter of a German born stable master, Ursula Ruhl was in a saddle before she could walk. Being an equestrian is not just part of her life, it is part of her DNA. When not holding reins, she is holding a camera. Ursula received her Bachelor of Arts in photography from the School of Communications at Webster University and has spent the last 25 years as photojournalist and photo editor for the Webster-Kirkwood Times, a Missouri newspaper. Ursula entered photojournalism when 35mm film was the platform and doing your own darkroom work was a requisite. She experienced the introduction of the first digital camera, and now carriers a full frame mirrorless. She still does her own darkroom work, but with a computer.
The majority of her photographic work depicts everyday life in small-town USA, capturing local people and local events, but national subjects have graced her lens; two presidents, a pope, and an overseas photo assignment to Bosnia and Hungary. Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards and accolades for her work. “It is Ursula’s wonderful eye for light and unique vantage points,” said past Times publisher/founder Dwight Bitikofer, that brings her full attention and creativity to each photo subject.”
Intertwining her two loves is her greatest delight, capturing the spectacular beauty of the equine and the special bond between horse and rider. Ursula resides in Webster Groves, MO with her husband and has two outstanding sons in college.
